Tourmaline was first discovered in 1820 on Mt. Mica in Maine, the same year Maine became the 23rd State. It is the Maine state gemstone, and has brought the state much fame as the source for some of the finest quality tourmaline in the world. Maine tourmaline has been found in a variety of colors, with the rarest being beautiful blue. This tourmaline commands a much higher value because of its rarity and beauty. Tourmaline imparts powerful healing energy and powerful protection energy. It gets its name from the Sinhalese name “turamali” meaning “stones with mixed colors.” Tourmaline is the birthstone for October, and marks the 8th wedding anniversary. It is the gemstone for Aries.
