ALEXANDRITE
Described by gemstone lovers as “emerald by day, ruby by night,” alexandrite is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it’s now found in East Africa, Brazil and Sri Lanka, but fine material is exceptionally rare and valuable. The gem was named after the heir to the throne, Alexander II. It caught the Russia’s attention because its green and red colors were the same as the national military colors of imperial Russia.
