TSAVORITE GARNET
Tsavorite is a very rare form of garnet with a stunningly vivid and electric green color that is unmistakable. Tsavorite was found in 1967, in Tsavo National Park, Kenya, by Scottish geologist Campbell R. Bridges. Bridges was a consultant for Tiffany & Co., and with their help, this new gemstone was first named and marketed to the jewelry industry in 1974. Many confuse its illustrious color with that of fine emerald, although the sparkle and glow of true tsavorite is far superior. By some estimates, tsavorite is around 200 times rarer than Emerald. It has been prized since its discovery, with stones above a carat or two being very difficult to find. Garnet is the birthstone for January, and the gemstone for Leo, Aquarius and Aries. It is the gem for the 2nd, 15th and 19th anniversaries. Tsavorite garnets have fair to good toughness, and a hardness of 6.5–7.50. They require special care and are not suited for everyday wear.
