PERIDOT
The Egyptians call it the “gem of the sun.” It has always been associated with light. Some believed that it offered protection from terrors of the night, especially when set in gold. Most peridot formed deep in the earth, delivered to the surface by volcanoes. It can also have a rare, extraterrestrial source, being contained in meteorites that have fallen to earth. “Peridot” comes from the Arabic “faridat,” meaning “gem.” From earliest times, people confused peridot with other gems. Some believe Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection might actually have been peridot. For centuries, people thought the amazing 200ct. gems adorning the shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. They are, in fact, peridots. Peridot is the birthstone for August, and the gemstone for Leo. It marks the 15th wedding anniversary, and has a hardness of 6.50-7.0, making it very durable for everyday wear.
