IOLITE
When tanzanite was discovered, gemologists initially suspected it might be cordierite. Today, cordierite is known by its trade name, iolite. The name “iolite” comes from the Greek word “ios,” meaning “violet.” Unlike tanzanite, iolite is rarely treated. Fine iolite comes in its beautiful blues and violets absolutely naturally. Its lack of enhancement is a selling point when considering that most blue gems, from blue topaz to fine sapphire, receive routine treatment of one type or another. Iolite is the gemstone for Aries and Pisces. It is the gem for the 21st anniversary. Iolite is 7- 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, but because it has distinct cleavage in one direction, its toughness is only fair. This makes iolite vulnerable to breakage exposed to rough daily wear.
